Santrofi Alewa Album review

Santrofi – Alewa

The Ghanaian eight-piece collective, Santrofi, are on a mission – to return Highlife music to its glorious past.

Referring to the ’60s and 70’s when the genre was the soundtrack to the country,
Emmanuel Ofori, the bands’ founder said: “Ghana is one of the richest places when it comes to music, but we lost it all, so we want to bring it back.”

This young generation of emerging musicians has worked and toured with many Ghanian legends including Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Ebo Taylor, and Pat Thomas.

Santrofi’s modern take on Highlife music has already wowed audiences on a tour across Europe and was a huge hit at WOMAD UK last year.

Their debut album ‘Alewa’ is a sumptuous mix of dance-guitar, funk, and silky harmonies – a Highlife extravaganza and a testimony, that music this exuberant  and refreshing sound deserves to be heard and danced to, not just in Ghana, but around the world.
